MISSION STATEMENT

SYMBOL AND AESTHETICS is a nonpartisan virtual space which strives to be a stimulation and resource for representational artists, their supporters, and all those who possess an affinity for the symbolic in art. Its purpose is to raise the level of discourse and the awareness for artists, patrons, critics and the general public by drawing their attention toward topics and issues within the ambit of Humanism. Such endeavors are grounded in a reverence for the synthesis of beauty and meaning as it interacts with systems of thought.

SYMBOL AND AESTHETICS promotes discussion in reassessing the development of contemporary representational art, placing a concurrent emphasis on the practical uses of philosophy as it pertains to the survival and evolution of the visual art form in question.

SYMBOL AND AESTHETICS affirms the values of beauty, craftsmanship, vitality, creativity, knowledge, sensuality, wonderment, and authenticity in artistic endeavor and output. Symbol and Aesthetics stresses the importance of philosophy in the pursuit of dialogue.

SYMBOL AND AESTHETICS has a deep appreciation for the cultural inheritance of world civilizations and references this heritage in a holochronic manner. Cultural context is used to better inform our understanding of unique achievements but this site avoids a strict adherence to cultural relativism which might hinder intellectual and artistic appreciation. Symbol and Aesthetics looks firmly forward and its approach is eclectic. It is about informed and varied ways of thinking upon the past-present-future of representational art within a symbolic context and its relation to the larger world.
