DAVID GREMARD ROMERO
David Gremard Romero is a Mexican-American artist who communicates cultural identity, gay masculinity, and spirituality through works of art that range from the intimate to the universal. He currently works from his Mexico City studio and exhibits in the United States, Europe, Singapore, and Mexico. Working with equal mastery in a wide range of media he is a prolific creator of vibrant graphic designs, allegorical portraits, and narratives. His creative ambition also extends into the field of ceramics and textile art.
The breadth of artistic expression in Gremard Romero’s work is remarkable as are the transitions the artwork has taken thus far in his career. His work harmonizes Baroque, Mesoamerican, and modern cultural influences within a contemporary presence, creating an inclusive aesthetic milieu. The harmonization is evinced in his pastel paintings where European gestural and rendering devices are a vehicle of empathy and used alongside Mexica attributes to denote the sitters as living avatars from the Aztec pantheon. For his recent project of re-interpreting the Pre-Columbian book, the Tonalamatl, Gremard Romero engages with indigenous communities and partakes in Otomi ceremonies marking the solstice. Through cultural immersion and knowledge he channels a living force into the design and luminous color of his spiritual imagery. Without historicizing Mexica or European artistic traditions, Gremard Romero facilitates a successful understanding between two cultures who have had a painful history with each other. The work is decidedly constructive with an authenticity that comes from a place of belief and passion; it is a journey he chronicles on his website Mexica Heart.
