F A Q s

1) Is Symbol and Aesthetics an art movement?

A: Symbol and Aesthetics is a virtual space for the public to acquaint themselves with the art and ideas of the featured artists. Symbol and Aesthetics is not an art movement, it can be better conceived of as a place to discover, enjoy, and contemplate the artistic and intellectual achievements of those who have been gracious enough to allow their work to be featured on the Symbol and Aesthetics website.

2) Is Symbol and Aesthetics a commercial site?

A: Symbol and Aesthetics is a non-commercial site. It does not sell anything; it does not request payments for itself or on behalf of others. Symbol and Aesthetics intends to remain non-commercial.

3) Can anyone submit content to the Symbol and Aesthetics website?

A: Symbol and Aesthetics does not discriminate against race, gender, religion/spiritual belief or lack of, or sexual orientation. The only
prerequisites for submitted content to be accepted for consideration is that the submitter be familiar with the Mission Statement and that the submission guidelines be followed.

4) Is Symbol and Aesthetics a revival of the 19th century Symbolist movement?

A: In short, no. Some of the artists featured on Symbol and Aesthetics may hold the Symbolist movement in great affection but their work remains ultimately original in conception and execution. When referring to the art movement it can be recognized by its proper noun: Symbolism. Otherwise, when speaking of symbolism we are referring to the use of symbols, personal or archetypal, original or traditional, and/or the application of color in a symbolic manner.

5) Does the art we see on Symbol and Aesthetics represent the style of the artist?

A: Symbol and Aesthetics does not label artists or speak for them. Symbol and Aesthetics highlights individual works which utilize and create symbolic imagery or employ color in a symbolic manner. The artwork found on this site does not necessarily reflect the entire oeuvre of the artist. We encourage the public to visit the artist’s personal website for a fuller understanding of their work and inspiration. Each artist is a culmination of a unique background, experience, and influences.
