CHIE YOSHII

Japanese by birth, Chie Yoshii moved to the US, where she completed BFA at Massachusetts College of Art in 2000 and studied with Adrian Gottlieb from 2002 to 2008. Much of her work is inspired by the analogy between mythological tales and the human psychology. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles.

"Painting for me is 'participation mystique.' It is not about reality, but about the fantasies aroused by its effects. They are viscerally conceived and more tangible than reality. I believe certain experiences resonate with archetypes in my collective unconscious; universal, inherited parts of the mind that bring these images to the surface of my consciousness. They construct surreal pictures in my mind as translations of these particular experiences.

In my paintings, I actualize this mythical inner reality. The process reassures and grounds me by connecting me to a collective psyche that is beyond time and location."
